Review: A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova

SYNOPSIS (via Goodreads):

“The elves come for two things: war and wives. In both cases, they come for death.

Three-thousand years ago, humans were hunted by powerful races with wild magic until the treaty was formed. Now, for centuries, the elves have taken a young woman from Luella’s village to be their Human Queen.

To be chosen is seen as a mark of death by the townsfolk. A mark nineteen-year-old Luella is grateful to have escaped as a girl. Instead, she’s dedicated her life to studying herbology and becoming the town’s only healer.

That is, until the Elf King unexpectedly arrives… for her.

Everything Luella had thought she’d known about her life, and herself, was a lie. Taken to a land filled with wild magic, Luella is forced to be the new queen to a cold yet blisteringly handsome Elf King. Once there, she learns about a dying world that only she can save.

The magical land of Midscape pulls on one corner of her heart, her home and people tug on another… but what will truly break her is a passion she never wanted.”

REVIEW:

A Deal with the Elf King is a stand-alone but also the first in a new series of fantasy romance novels by Elise Kova. Each book focuses on a different couple, but the worlds are tied together. This is something you normally see in contemporary romance novels, but something super exciting to see in fantasy romance.

The artwork alone drew me into this book. I mean look at that cover! I’ve had a copy of this for the last couple of months, but it just kept getting pushed back. I read Kova’s Air Awakens series in January and absolutely loved that series. I love Kova’s writing style and world-building. She also has a way of just sucking you in, I couldn’t put this book down once I picked it up.

I loved the relationship between Eldas and Luella. It is a slow burn of the best kind. I love how much they complement each other, and the growth they bring about in each other as well. Sometimes I wanted to shake some sense into Luella because it felt like she was just being too stubborn. The payoff was so great though, so I can’t really complain. I also loved the mystery surrounding the Human Queens and their magic.

If you are looking for a great fantasy romance, please check this book out. It definitely checks off all the boxes and I love that it is a stand-alone. Also, if you are looking for a little more Eldas and Luella action, there is a bonus scene that is a nice little epilogue.

RATING: 5/5

WWW Wednesday – December 23rd, 2020

Happy Festivus! It’s Wednesday which means another WWW Wednesday. I’m answering the three questions below. Let me know your answers in the comments or share on your own blog!

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading A Rogue of One’s Own by Evie Dunmore. I was very excited to pick this up at my library since I read Bringing Down the Duke at the beginning of the year and loved it.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Air Awakens by Elise Kova. It is book one of the Air Awakens series. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I think it had some really great world building and I loved Vhalla and Prince Aldrik. It has some similarities to the Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo, but isn’t a carbon copy.

What do you think you will read next?

I think I’ll be reading the next in the Bargainer series, Strange Hymn by Laura Thalassa. I loved Rhapsodic and completely devoured it. So I’m excited to see where this series goes, and see how Callie and Desmond relationship develops.

As always, check out my Instagram!

What are you currently reading?

In A Holidaze by Christina Lauren, this was my Book of the Month choice and I’m very excited to finally start reading it. It has a Groundhog Day-like plot involving a time loop just set around Christmas. I’m loving it so far.

What did you recently finish reading?

Just finished City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments #2) by Cassandra Clare. I am not loving this series so far, but I’ve also heard that the first three books are the weakest set in the Shadowhunters world. So I am pushing through. I requested City of Glass at my library, but I think I’m going to read a few books before I start that.

What do you think you will read next?

I think my next book is going to be Air Awakens by Elise Kova. It is book one in another fantasy series (I think I might have a problem). It sounds super interesting and it is featured through Kindle Unlimited. We will see how In A Holidaze has me feeling after I finish it, since that will really determine what I read next.

Let me know what you are reading!
