Review: A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova

SYNOPSIS (via Goodreads):

“The elves come for two things: war and wives. In both cases, they come for death.

Three-thousand years ago, humans were hunted by powerful races with wild magic until the treaty was formed. Now, for centuries, the elves have taken a young woman from Luella’s village to be their Human Queen.

To be chosen is seen as a mark of death by the townsfolk. A mark nineteen-year-old Luella is grateful to have escaped as a girl. Instead, she’s dedicated her life to studying herbology and becoming the town’s only healer.

That is, until the Elf King unexpectedly arrives… for her.

Everything Luella had thought she’d known about her life, and herself, was a lie. Taken to a land filled with wild magic, Luella is forced to be the new queen to a cold yet blisteringly handsome Elf King. Once there, she learns about a dying world that only she can save.

The magical land of Midscape pulls on one corner of her heart, her home and people tug on another… but what will truly break her is a passion she never wanted.”

REVIEW:

A Deal with the Elf King is a stand-alone but also the first in a new series of fantasy romance novels by Elise Kova. Each book focuses on a different couple, but the worlds are tied together. This is something you normally see in contemporary romance novels, but something super exciting to see in fantasy romance.

The artwork alone drew me into this book. I mean look at that cover! I’ve had a copy of this for the last couple of months, but it just kept getting pushed back. I read Kova’s Air Awakens series in January and absolutely loved that series. I love Kova’s writing style and world-building. She also has a way of just sucking you in, I couldn’t put this book down once I picked it up.

I loved the relationship between Eldas and Luella. It is a slow burn of the best kind. I love how much they complement each other, and the growth they bring about in each other as well. Sometimes I wanted to shake some sense into Luella because it felt like she was just being too stubborn. The payoff was so great though, so I can’t really complain. I also loved the mystery surrounding the Human Queens and their magic.

If you are looking for a great fantasy romance, please check this book out. It definitely checks off all the boxes and I love that it is a stand-alone. Also, if you are looking for a little more Eldas and Luella action, there is a bonus scene that is a nice little epilogue.

RATING: 5/5

WWW Wednesday – March 3rd, 2021

Happy March! I took a bit of break from posting in February. Long story short, my anxiety and depression were kicking my butt and I kept getting really frustrated by my book choices. I’m back now though, ready to talk about the books I’ve been reading.

It is Wednesday, which means its WWW Wednesday! I’m answering the three questions below. Let me know you answers in the comments or share to your own blog! You can always follow along on my Instagram for more book talk.

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading the talk of the book world, A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas. I had some fun pre-order drama with Barnes & Noble, that delayed me in reading this book by a week, but I’m now about half way through and enjoying it. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Nesta, so this book has been interesting. One big thing it is doing, is making me want to reread the ACOTAR series. I really miss Feyre and Rhysand. Obviously they are still players in the story, but I just want to hear everything about them. I feel like I’m going to need to schedule a reread in to help fill the hole.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished reading A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova. I absolutely loved this book. It was everything I needed from a fantasy romance. I’ll be posting a full review to the blog soon, but if you love fantasy romance this book checks off all the boxes. I loved that it was a stand-alone, and the slow burn romance between Eldas and Luella is perfect. I definitely recommend!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I have been really bad about picking my next book to read for the last couple of weeks. That being said, my hold on The Hating Game by Sally Thorne just became available at my library. I think this will be my next read and should be perfect after finishing A Court of Silver Flames.

It’s Wednesday which means another WWW Wednesday. I’m answering the three questions below. Let me know your answers in the comments or share on your own blog!

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading Fire Falling by Elise Kova (Book #2 in the Air Awakens series). Super excited to see what happens next in this series. It has similar vibes to the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. So if you are looking for something to fill that hole, I recommend this series.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished The Dating Plan by Sara Desai. It was my January choice for Book of the Month and an early release. It goes on sale to the general public in March. I absolutely loved this book. It was exactly what I needed to start off the year, and a distraction from the chaos of the first week of January. I definitely recommend this book!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I think my next read will probably be The Darkest Star by Jennifer L. Armentrout. It is a spinoff of The Lux series, which I finished last year. I’m excited to see where this spinoff series goes. Honestly, though my mood has been all over the place so far this January and I haven’t really been able to stick to the books I’ve been picking.

Have you read any of these books? What are you currently reading?

Happy Festivus! It’s Wednesday which means another WWW Wednesday. I’m answering the three questions below. Let me know your answers in the comments or share on your own blog!

  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading A Rogue of One’s Own by Evie Dunmore. I was very excited to pick this up at my library since I read Bringing Down the Duke at the beginning of the year and loved it.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Air Awakens by Elise Kova. It is book one of the Air Awakens series. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I think it had some really great world building and I loved Vhalla and Prince Aldrik. It has some similarities to the Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo, but isn’t a carbon copy.

What do you think you will read next?

I think I’ll be reading the next in the Bargainer series, Strange Hymn by Laura Thalassa. I loved Rhapsodic and completely devoured it. So I’m excited to see where this series goes, and see how Callie and Desmond relationship develops.
